Abdul Malik, Founder & President, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh and President, BNNCP presided over the meeting. Professor AKM Mohibullah, Secretary General, BNNCP and President, Bangladesh Cardiac Society welcomed the participants and Professor Sohel Reza Choudhury, Organizing Secretary, BNNCP and Head of the Department, Epidemiology and Research, NHFH&RI delivered the keynote presentation on NCD burden in Bangladesh.
Eminent physicians discussed about non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Tobacco is one of the main risk factors for NCDs. Through the discussion of the participants, it has come out that for NCD control and prevention tobacco control is an obligatory issue.
Increasing tax on tobacco products is one of the most important strategies for tobacco control. Effective taxation on tobacco products has not been reflected in the budget of FY 2017-18. This is alarming for public health. Considering this, honorable MPs and other participants opined to raise tax on tobacco products as the price become beyond the buying capacity.
Honorable Parliament Members were highly sensitized by the discussion of meeting participants and expressed their eagerness to be involved in the activities of NCD control and prevention as well as in tobacco control to protect public health. They also mentioned that a dedicated cell for NCD control and prevention is needed in national level.
Professor Khondker Abdul Awal Rizvi, Secretary General, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh; Professor Harun-Ur-Rashid, President, Kidney Foundation of Bangladesh; Professor Golam Mohiuddin Faruque, Joint Secretary General, Bangladesh Cancer Society; Professor Abdullah Al Shafi Majumder, Secretary General, Bangladesh Cardiac Society; Professor Hajera Mahtab, Honorary President, Endocrine Society of Bangladesh; Dr. Tara Kessaram, Medical Officer, Non-communicable Diseases, WHO Country Office for Bangladesh; Mr. Md.
