A delegation of United Forum Against Tobacco (UFAT) visited NBR Office on 15 May 2017 with desire to meet with Mr. Md. Nojibur Rahman, Chairman, National Board of Revenue (NBR) according to a prior appointment from him. Due to an unavoidable reason UFAT delegate missed the meeting with NBR Chair. But they met with Barrister Jahangir Hossain, Member (VAT Policy), NBR.

In this meeting UFAT representatives have expressed rampant demands for simplifying the existing tobacco tax structure and imposing higher tax on tobacco products (both in smoking and smokeless tobacco) as the price of those products can be increased effectively. They urged to consider this issue in the upcoming budget of FY 2017-18. UFAT representatives appealed intensely for the increasing the price of tobacco products up to that level as it will be reached beyond the buying capacity.

By this time, a set of specific recommendations and proposals regarding tobacco taxation has been submitted. Barrister Jahangir Hossain appreciated the visit and listened the comments of delegates with condign importance. He said NBR is also endeavoring about the taxation issues of tobacco products.
