Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) have emerged as a serious health problem for Bangladesh and almost 54% of all deaths are due to NCDs in this country. 27% of total deaths are due to cardiovascular disease (CVD) which has become the leading cause of death in Bangladesh. Various surveys have shown an alarming level of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in this population. This high level of CVD is causing catastrophic impact at individual, family and societal level has become a treat for sustainable development despite impressive achievement by Bangladesh in controlling infectious diseases and sanitation. Therefore, primary prevention along with provisions of modern treatment and rehabilitation need to be strengthened by both government and non-government health care organizations. Research is essential for identification of CVD risk factors unique for this population and also for appropriate health promotion methods and development of newer appropriate treatment modalities for this population. Department of Epidemiology and Research at National Heart Foundation Hospital and Research Institute (NHFH&RI) was established in the year 2003 to cater for the growing need of clinical and epidemiological research studies in the field of cardiovascular disease by the faculties and post graduate students of the institute as well as by various other national and international research organizations.
