United Forum Against Tobacco and National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh organized "Third Conference on Tobacco Control in Bangladesh" on 1st October 2016, National Heart Foundation Hospital & Research Institute, Dhaka. The conference was held with a view to exchange ideas, views and disseminate activities of different anti-tobacco organizations working in Bangladesh. About 200 participants including high level policy makers, senior physicians, representatives of international tobacco control organizations, researchers and anti-tobacco activists participated in the conference.
In the inaugural session of the conference, Mr. Asaduzzaman Khan MP, Honorable Minister, Ministry of Home Affairs has reiterated the commitment of the government for making the country tobacco free before 2040. He also agreed to include tobacco control in the curriculum of police training academy. National Professor Brig. (rtd.) Abdul Malik, President, National Heart Foundation of Bangladesh and Chairman of UFT presided over the inaugural session.
In the morning scientific sessions papers were presented on global tobacco situation, TB and Tobacco association and Tobacco cessation by Dr. Mahbubus Sobhan of National Tobacco Control Cell, Dr. Asif Mujtaba Mahmud of Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control & Research (IEDCR), and Professor Sohel Reza Choudhury, Professor and Head, Department of Epidemiology and Research, respectively. These presentations generated discussions and close collaboration with national TB control program for promoting tobacco cessation among TB patients were suggested.
In the panel discussion session, various experts from different organizations discussed challenges Bangladesh facing for tobacco control and way forward. Mr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, President, Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC); Mr. Mohammad Ruhul Quddus, Coordinator, National Tobacco Control Cell, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Professor M.A Rashid, Director, Medical Education & Health Manpower Development, The Directorate General of Health Services, Professor Dr. Kaosar Afsana, Director of the Health, Nutrition and Population Programme, BRAC, Bangladesh; Mr. Mohammad Shahjahan, Director & CEO, Bangladesh Centre for Communication Programs (BCCP); Mr. Md. Shafiqul Islam, Country Advisor Bangladesh, Vital Strategies, LLC; Mr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, Addl. Secretary, Cabinet Division; Professor Golam Mohiuddin Faruque, Joint Secretary, Bangladesh Cancer Society; Ms. Farida Akhter, Executive Director, UBINIG; Mr. Mozammel Hossain Monju, Deputy Editor, The Daily Samakal; Saifuddin Ahmed, Executive Director WBB Trust; Mr. Syed Mahbubul Alam, Technical Consultant, The Union South-East Asia Office; Dr. Mahfuzur Rahman Bhuiyan, Grants Manager, CTFK, Bangladesh Program; Mr. ABM Zubair, Executive Director, PROGGA (Knowledge for Progress) were the panelist in the panel sessions. Raising tobacco tax, emphasizing on controlling aggressive farming by tobacco industry, strict enforcement of law and need for a national policy and program and building a social movement were the recommendations from the panelists.
In the afternoon scientific session, researchers and representatives from different anti-tobacco organizations such as Dhaka Ahsania Mission, WBB Trust, Shimantic, ACD, NHFB, AID Foundation, TABINAJ and YPSA presented their achievements and activities.
